Request

Sanction a history rewrite of the existing stacked PR line behind #23 so the empty-description commit is given an explicit description before merge/review continues.

Commit needing rewrite

qxwoxovuupzn fa3c4dd5145b | (empty description, preserved from existing stacked line)

This is not one of the eight ticket-sweep commits; it sits below them in the already-stacked line that #23 currently exposes from main to tango/ticket-sweep.

Why this needs owner sanction

The rewrite would change existing stacked history below the ticket sweep. That is outside an agent's normal offer/push authority, so it needs an explicit owner decision naming the source/destination before any jj describe/rebase/repush work.

Proposed sanctioned action

If approved, rewrite only commit qxwoxovuupzn / fa3c4dd5145b to add a real description, then refresh PR #23's branch. Do not change file content or reorder the stack.

Blocked by: owner approval.

Linked from PR #23. The PR currently preserves the empty-description commit exactly; this issue is the authorization surface for any later rewrite/repush.

The premise of this request has expired

This asked to sanction a rewrite of qxwoxovuupzn / fa3c4dd "before merge/review continues". PR #23 merged on 2026-08-04 at 16:05 without the sanction being granted, so fa3c4dd — still empty-described — is now on main at 4cc8149, seven commits below the tip. Confirmed: git log --oneline forge/main shows it with a blank subject line.

Re-evaluating rather than leaving it standing as written, per law 13's leniency clause (an external event — the merge — landed before the ticket resolved):

The rewrite is still legal. Law 2 freezes history at or below the newest version tag; the repo has no tags at all, so the entire tail of main is still clay. Nothing about the merge closed the window.

But the cost changed. Before the merge this was a rewrite of an unmerged PR branch. Now it is a rewrite of main's tail — which is exactly what law 2 permits and law 6 anticipates (origin only ever receives tagged states, and no tag exists yet), but it is a different act, with different blast radius, and the sanction should be given against the act actually being asked for.

Three options, none of which I have authority to pick:

  1. Rewrite main's tail to describe fa3c4dd, while the absence of tags makes it free. Cheapest now; strictly more expensive after the first tag, at which point it becomes impossible.
  2. Accept it and let the first tag freeze an empty description into permanent history. Law 5's "every line in main must answer why do you exist" then has one line that cannot.
  3. Describe it in place at the next rewrite of that region for another reason, folding the cost into work already happening.

Worth deciding before the first git tag -s, because option 1 disappears at that moment and the tag horizon is the point of no return. Flagging that timing as the actual deadline on this ticket — it does not have one otherwise.
